History of Haiti
Haiti is situated in the western one third of the island of Hispaniola between the Caribbean Sea and North Atlantic Ocean, west of Dominican Republic.
The European navigator Christopher Columbus happened upon the island Hispaniola on December 5, 1492. The natives of the island are Arwakan. The colonists killed a considerable number of the natives both directly and indirectly by enslavement and murder. The main colonists are Spain in the East and French in the western part of Hispaniola. French had begun to grow tobacco, indigo, cotton, and cacao on the fertile northern plain, thus prompting the importation of 790,000 African slaves.
In 1971, slaves in the northern region of the colony staged a revolt that began the Haitian Revolution. The rebellion spread through the entire colony.

Shortly afterwards, the US, responding to complaints to President Woodron Wilson from American bank to which Haiti was deeply in debt, occupied the country. Then reforms were carried out. Public health, education, and agriculture development were greatly improved.
The country had full democratic election in 1930. In 1946, increasing economic difficulties led to a military coup. Because of political disorders, the military coups occurred over 30 times in their history.
